I can not live without my iPhone. Without my phone, sometimes I get the feeling that I lost connection with the world. When we talked about how technology has evolved and is still evolving it made me realize how attached I have become to my technology and that it could not always be a good thing. Texting, e-mail and instant messaging has made our society so socially awkward it frightens me to think about how the future generations are going to interact with people, NOT over the computer. Will they even be able to hold a real conversation? Some people can't even do that right now, and technology is no where near where it could be in the next 15-20 years.
I think the creation of social media basically was a death sentence for human interaction. People feel so much more confident behind the security of a computer or cell phone screen, they are willing to push limits they never would dare go near in a real life situation.
Our class discussion really brought me to highlight the important things in life and while technology is definitely one of them, I hope I can find a way to change the way I use it.
Annie I completely agree with your blog post in saying that social media is a death sentence to human interaction. While surfing the web I notice the rediculous posts, conversations, pictures and blogs that rip apart other people's lives. This new social interaction gives users no restrictions and no restraint. The amount of bullying that is done on the web is outrageous and what makes it worse is what is done on the web cannotn be undone, it is forever.

ReplyDeleteI really agree with everything you said in this blog post. I actually wrote a similar Inconvenient Truth blog that sparked because of our modernism/post modernism conversations in Humanities. When we began talking about our addiction to our cell phones and technology in class, it really stroke a chord in my life and definitely in the lives of most teenagers - most people even. The fact that we rely so much on our smartphones to get through our everyday lives is sad and troublesome to me. Of course using our smartphones for things like communicating and calculators is completely normal, but when we start to feel anxious or depressed when we are not on our phones it becomes a serious problem. Our face to face communication skills have also suffered because of this technology craze. I too hope that we are able to put the screens down and practice verbal communication once again.

ReplyDeleteI honestly couldn't agree with you more. I ask myself that question almost every day. This issue is everywhere we go, even with in the walls of Glenbrook South. There is not one day where I dont see a large amount of people around eachother on their phones instead of talking and interacting with the people around them. It shocks me everytime I see it. But the worst part of all of this is that I am sometimes one of those people. I think out of everything that technology has done to human beings, the fact that I am a culprit of not sociallizing when I have the chance to is something that will always bother me. Other than that, I really liked this blog post. Good work!
Annie, I love this post and I agree 100%. I believe technology has given us power we don't know how to handle. We have become socially awkward and we abuse technology in a number of ways. Social websites are for staying in touch to those out of reach- not stalking our neighbors.great post, I hope we learn to better use technology in the future!
ReplyDeleteAnnie I completely agree and although some people argue that technology helps us communicate in a lot of ways, which can be true, we need to get back to true face to face communication. I used to leave my phone in my car every morning at school until my lunch hour and when i walked through the halls I felt so isolated. I was the only one not connected to some sort of social media. There was no one to talk to me because they were all talking through technology. Overall I agree and think that especially at school, we all need to communicate and interact with one another.
